Soil Compaction And Consolidation-Proctor Test

  • COMPACTION-

  1.  This is a instantaneous phenomenon.
  2.  Here, soil is unsaturated.
  3. Densification is due to a reduction in the volume of air.
  4. This is decrease natural pressure and increase effective pressure.

  • CONSOLIDATION-

  1. This is a time dependent phenomenon.
  2. Here, soil is completely saturated.
  3. This is done by load placed on the soil.
  4. This generally leads to decrease porosity and increase.
  5. Increase shear strength.
  6. Improve bearing capacity and stability.
  7. Reduction in compressibility and permeability.

                                                              CONSOLIDATION

  • STANDARD PROCTOR TEST-

  1. Volume mould is 944 cc.
  2. The weight of the hammer is 2.495 Kg and free fall from 304.8 mm.
  3. The mould is filled by 3 layers with 25 blows per blow.

  • MODIFIED PROCTOR TEST-

  1. Here, we use heavier hammer of 4.54 kg and free fall from 457.2 mm.
  2. This is filled by 5 layer and 25 blows per layer.

  • INDIAN STANDARD EQUIVALENT OF STANDARD PROCTOR TEST-

    1.  Light compaction test.
    2. volume of mould is 1000 cc.
    3. Weight of hammer is 2.6 kg and free fall from 310 mm height.
    4. Optimum moisture content is greater than Modified Proctor test.
    5. 25 blows per layer and 3 layers.

                                STANDARD PROCTOR TEST APPARATUS

  • INDIAN STANDARD EQUIVALENT OF MODIFIED PROCTOR TEST-

  1. Heavy compaction test.
  2. Volume of mould is 1000 cc.
  3. The weight of the hammer is 4.9 Kg and free fall from 450 mm height.
  4. Maximum dry density is greater than Stand Proctor test.
  5.  25 blows per layer and 5 layers.

  • The ratio of heavy compaction test to light compaction test = 4.5 .

Going to graduate school was a positive decision for me. I enjoyed the coursework, the presentations, the fellow students, and the professors. And since my company reimbursed 100% of the tuition, the only cost that I had to pay on my own was for books and supplies. Otherwise, I received a free master’s degree.
