DIRECT SHEAR TEST

      Advantages-
  1. Quick inexpansive and simple.
  2. In case of sand, sample is prepared easily.
     Disadvantages-

  1. Drainage condition can not be control.
  2. Pore water pressure can not be measured.
  3. This test is not suitable for fine grained soil.
  4. useful for sand.
  5. Failure plane is Pre-determined and this may not be deraction of weakest plane.
  6. Stress distribution is non uniform.
  7. Magnitude of direction should be known as priciple stress.Image result for direct shear test

TRIAXIAL TEST

     Advantage-

  1. This test is not a quick test.

     Disadvantages-

  1. Pore water measurements can be done accurately.
  2. This test is suitable for all soil, like sand, silt, clay.
  3. Failure plane is not pre-determined.
  4. Stress distribution is uniform.
  5. There should be no volume change.
