ELISA LEONIDA ZAMFIRESCU was one of the world's first female engineer.She was born in 10th November, 1887 in Galati, Romania.Her father, Atanase Leonida was a career officer and her brother was also a engineer, Dimitrie Leonida.

In her early life, she was rejected by the school of Bridges and Roads in Bucharest due to prejudices against women in the sciences.Then, she was accepted at the Royal Academy of Technology Berlin, Charlottenburg. She graduated in the degree in engineering in 1912.Which has been made her as a world's 1st female engineer.Zamfirescu was the 1st women member of A.G.I.R( General Association of Romanian Engineers). But the Irish engineer Alice Perry graduated six year before Zamfirescu in 1906.
Zamfirescu worked as a assistant at the global institute of Romania. Then, she joined the Red Cross at the time of world war. She met and married chemist Constantin Zamfirescu at around this time.After the war, Zamfirescu returned to the Geological Institute. She done several geology laboratories and participate in various field studies.
Zamfirescu retired in 1963 at the age of 75. She was involved in activism for disarmament in retirement. She died at the age of 86 on 25th November, 1973.

A street in sector 1 of Bucharest bears her name. An award for women in science and technology was established in her name, the Premiul Elisa Leonida-Zamfirescu.
