These are some important points from Highway engineering, have to remember.
  •  Maximum permissible width of vehicle as per IRC specification is 2.44 m.
  •  Minimum width of footpath should be 1.5 m and it may increased based on the pedestrian traffic volume.
  •  Minimum width of the cycle track is 2 m and it may increase by 1 m from each additional cycle lane.

  •  Camber- Transverse slope provided to the road to drainoff rain water from road surface is known as camber. 
  • Kerb- A vertical member along the age of a pavement provided for supporting raised footpaths is called kerb.
  • As per IRC, coefficient of longitudinal friction lies between 0.35 to 0.40 which is used in sight distance calculation and coefficient of lateral friction is 0.15 , used in horizontal curve design.
  • The camber should be at least 0.5% steeper than the cross slope of adjoining pavement, subjected to a minimum of 3% and maximum value of 5%.
  • Smooth and worn out tyre offer higher friction factors on dry pavements than new tyres with treads due to large areas of contact but on wet pavements new tyres have higher friction factors.
  • IRC recommended values of extrawedening for single and two lane pavement are given below-
          (i) If R> 300 m, then extrawedening is not provided.
          (ii) If R< 50 m, then extrawedening is provided at inner edge.
          (iii) If 50< R < 300 m, then extrawedening is provided at both the edges. 
  • Compensated gradient = Gradient - Grade compensation.
  • Total cycle length of traffic signal = Green interval + Red interval + Change interval.
  • As per IRC the standard dimension of a car is taken as 5 * 2.5 m and that for a truck is 3.75* 7.5 m. Generally used angle of parking are 30°, 45°, 60°, 90°.
  • Stop sign is octahedral in shape and red in colour with a white border and give way sign is in triangular shape with apex downwards and white in colour with red border.Those are important sings of traffic sign.

  • Length of weaving section is kept atleast 4 times the width of the weaving section of traffic rotaries. 
  • Floating car method is used to carry out speed and delay study.Origin and destination study is used to plan the road network and other facilities for vehicular traffics.
  • Method of traffic signal designing are Trial cycle method, Approximate method,Webster method and IRC method.
